The Fertility Workup

In order to determine if you need fertility treatment, including IVF, you and your partner will need to undergo several tests, often referred to as the fertility workup.

Female Partner

- Cycle Day 3 blood tests. These tests are performed on the third day of the menstrual cycle, and usually test estrogen, FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone) and AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) which measures ovarian reserve.
- Uterine evaluation. A HSG (hysterosalpingogram) evaluates the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
- Baseline ultrasound. The ultrasound or sonogram will measure the ovaries and antral follicle count to determine ovarian reserve.
- Medical and lifestyle history.

Male partner

- Semen analysis. The semen analysis will look at sperm count, sperm morphology – size, shape and appearance of sperm, and sperm motility – whether the sperm are moving well, to determine if male infertility is a factor.
- Physical exam.
- Medical and lifestyle history.
